Rooney linked with the Imps
Manchester United star Wayne Rooney's younger brother John has, according to reports, been invited for pre-season training with Lincoln City after being shown the door by Barnsley.
The 22-year-old midfielder did not play a single game for the Tykes after joining them from a spell in the United States' Major Soccer League in October, and he could be set for a reunion with Imps boss Gary Simpson.
Simpson was Keith Alexander's assistant at Macclesfield in 2008 when they signed him following his release by Premier League side Everton. He played just over 40 games for the Silkmen, scoring three goals, before opting to head for the States, where he eventually penned a deal with New York Red Bulls after being selected in the second round of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft.
He played only five games for the Bulls before joining USL Pro outfit Orlando City in January 2012. After 13 outings and five goals for Orlando, he opted for a return to the UK, where he signed a deal in October with Barnsley until the end of the season. He never figured for the Tykes under David Flitcroft and was shown the door last week and is now rumoured to be interesting the Imps.
Lincoln are said to be closing in on an unnamed midfielder and could Rooney be that man?
