Report V Sunderland U21's
'First half we caused them enough problems with Yussuf having a couple of good chances and Dixon mainly from corners especially. We should have made at least one of the 4-5 chances count. Farman didn't have a save to make but still picked the ball out of his net from some typical sloppy set piece defending (how often do we say this!?). I felt Yussuf and Dixon where the bright sparks in the first half, Waide to me looked a little off pace in an unfamiliar role behind the frontline. Wright chased a lot of long balls but they managed to shackle him pretty well.
Second half they got far more of the ball and we struggled to create any chances apart from the odd long range shot. Looked like Dixon and Yussuf went of with knocks as they were both limping. Rowe and Tomlinson look reasonably intelligent footballers so would like to see more of them but its hard to really get a gauge on how we played as Sunderland kept the ball well and passed it around very slickly, whereas we only really passed it around the back. Lost count how often we punted it forward for Wright to try and win it in the air and the long ball didn't really work I felt.
We wont come up against this calibre of opposition on a regular basis so its not all doom and gloom, as Jules said, 2-0 probably flattered them, esp after a stronger first half from us. Unsure as to the system and formations Simmo is going to use because we have a lot of options up front, but as we know, can we keep enough goals out at the other end?'
'As for the second goal, they broke away from defence really quickly which opened us up with a great through ball. Farman doing a good job being sweeper keeper just getting to the ball first but unluckily hitting the advancing forward, the ball could have gone anywhere, but it ricocheted at least once right into his path for an easy roll into an empty net.'
We will be publishing some highlights of the game and some photos either later today or tomorrow.
