Match Preview: The Cards V The Imps
After the long summer the Imps are finally back in competitive action, heading south this Saturday to face Skrill Premier Division rivals Woking F.C, in what will be a tough opening game at the Kingfield Stadium.
With a full squad to choose from Gary Simpson will need to make some tough decisions with his team selection, after a number of players have impressed during pre-season. Mo Fofana gave the team much needed balance when introduced in the last friendly against Boston United, so Alan Power or Danny Rowe could make way for the Frenchman in the middle alongside Jon Nolan.
Nat Brown who looked rusty last time out, will be hoping to renew his partnership with Andrew Boyce at the heart of the Imps defence, but Luke Foster may well be preferred next to Boyce. Sean Newton and Tom Miller if fit, should start at full back ahead of Dan Gray.
Jake Sheridan, Waide Fairhurst, Bohan Dixon, Adi Yussuf and Ben Tomlinson will all be looking vying for starts in the wide positions alongside Nick Wright who has been preferred centrally, assuming the Imps continue with their 4-2-3-1 formation. Conner Robinson and Todd Jordan will also be looking to be involved after both featuring in Simpsons plans in pre-season.
Woking were tough opponents for the Imps last season with the away game ending in a 1-1 draw and the home game ending 2-0 to Woking. They finished a very respectable 12th place four places above the Imps last season. There pre-season has gone well and Garry Hill's men have beaten league opposition twice at the Kingfield Stadium in recent weeks, in the shape of championship Bournemouth and League 1 Gillingham.
Ex Imps Gavin McCallum and John Nutter should feature on Saturday for Woking. McCallum will no doubt face a hostile reception as always, after his ill-fated stint with the Imps under Steve Tilson. Nutter who left the Imps last season, citing a need to be closer to his family in the South, should receive a more warm welcome from the travelling Imps fans.
