Mileages 2016-17

Now that the constitution of next season's National League has been finalised, it is time to take our annual look at the mileages and journey times to away games. Having lost a couple of relatively local matches in Halifax and Grimsby, the suggestion is that distances are set to rise yet again, but the news is not necessarily all bad. Those two local games have been replaced by three within a 100-mile radius of Lincoln (York, North Ferriby and Solihull), whilst the other three are relatively accessible despite the distances involved. To put some meat on the bones:

2015/16
Total mileage: 6,642
Total travel time: 124 hours 30 minutes
Average mileage: 289
Average journey: 5 hours 25 minutes

2016/17
Total mileage: 6,816 (+174 miles)
Total travel time: 125 hours 28 minutes (+58 minutes)
Average mileage: 297 (+8 miles)
Average journey: 5 hours 27 minutes (+2 minutes)

So, the mileages are up again for next year, but there is only a very marginal increase in journey times. This is because four of the new clubs (Dagenham & Redbridge, Maidstone, Solihull and Sutton) are effectively motorway all the way, whilst the other two (York and North Ferriby) are local journeys.

Lost (round trips): Welling (320 miles), Cheltenham (256), Kidderminster (236), Altrincham (202), Halifax (166) and Grimsby (78).

Gained (round trips): Sutton (354), Maidstone (346), Dagenham & Redbridge (296), Solihull (182), York (168) and North Ferriby (86).

So, no real change for next season. And at least we won't be losing at Welling next time around.

Mileages (one way): Torquay 272; Dover 210; Barrow 199; Eastleigh 192; Aldershot 177; Sutton 177; Maidstone 173; Woking 168; Bromley 166; Forest Green 163; Gateshead 153; Dagenham & Redbridge 148; Southport 144; Wrexham 143; Tranmere 142; Braintree 136; Chester 134; Boreham Wood 129; Solihull 91; Guiseley 84; York 84; Macclesfield 80; North Ferriby 43.

Journey times (one way): Torquay 4h 33m; Dover 3h 39m; Eastleigh 3h 29m; Barrow 3h 27m; Sutton 3h 12m; Aldershot 3h 8m; Woking 3h 3m; Maidstone 2h 58m; Forest Green 2h 57m; Southport 2h 54m; Bromley 2h 51m; Wrexham 2h 51m; Chester 2h 43m; Tranmere 2h 41m; Dagenham & Redbridge 2h 40m; Gateshead 2h 39m; Braintree 2h 27m; Macclesfield 2h 17m; Boreham Wood 2h 13m; Guiseley 1h 45m; Solihull 1h 39m; York 1h 39m; North Ferriby 59m.

Thanks for this - looking forward to our more local derbies and a trip to York again [being an exiled Yorky] - but we are cotemplating some more out of the way spots this year including Barrow and Torquay

A bit disappointed that there was no map.

Take out the new teams North Ferriby and York and we'd be in an enormous blank area. Take out Solihull Moors and there would be a truly odd North/South divide.

Would have been worse if Truro had promoted.

Exactly, those journey times are in normal traffic conditions. Big warning!

I remember going to Woking for the first game of the season in 2013. Stayed overnight in Potters Bar and set off on the 40-mile trip to Woking at midday, intending to have a wander around Woking and get some lunch. The M25 was absolutely choked; arrived in the ground 3 minutes after kick-off.

Really strange that the centre of the country is almost vacant on the map.

Shame we've got no really close derby game like Grimsby or Boston to take around 800-1000 fans too, but if we start winning games early I can see us outnumbering fans at North Ferriby and Solihull, and we might take a decent following to York and Macclesfield.

I'd hope we outnumber NFU even if we're on a bad run!

Thank God we aren't Gateshead:

Round trips: Torquay 770, Dover 688, Eastleigh 654, Maidstone 614, Sutton 614, Aldershot 608, Bromley 600, Woking 590, Dagenham 564, FGR 550, Braintree 540, Boreham Wood 526, Solihull 408, Wrexham 392, Chester 372, Tranmere 352, Macclesfield 328, Southport 312, Lincoln 306, Barrow 270, North Ferriby 268, Guiseley 190, York 162.

TOTAL: 10,678. Average mileage = 464.

In terms of times, the total journey time is 183 hours and 40 minutes, which equals 7 days and 15 hours. Allowing for delays, Gateshead and their fans will be spending around 8 whole days in their coaches/cars in the space of 9 months!

Average journey time = 8 hours.

I won't be surprised if their away following is quite low.

Not bad from Berkshire:

8 games within circa 1.5 hours and 4 more within 2 hours.

Me too, - had to come off the M25 and exert some jiggery pokery around the back roads.
