In 1974-75 there were play offs?
In 1981-82 season there were play offs?
There’s a big shout out for Lincoln sweeping all aside in 75-76 in the third division to reach the equivalent of today’s championship.
In 82-83... on the assumption we’d won through in the play offs.
We might easily have been having palpertations over a possible chance of promotion to today’s premier league. (Around Christmas)

Well without playoffs but just having goal difference instead of goal average we would have been promoted in 1974-75.

The GA difference was less than 1 goal over the entire season, wasn't it? Still baffles me how we had such a large GD advantage yet the GA went against us.

Well, it was the number of goals conceded compared to the number scored - the lower the better was how it worked.

This meant that in practice it rewarded defensive football, as for example a 2-1 win was better than a 5-2 win, and any win with zero goals conceded was better than anything with even a single goal against - so 1-0 was better than, say, 4-1.

That year our goal difference was +31 as against Chester's +26. But it didn't work like that. Our goal average (goals scored divided by goals conceded 79/48) was 1.646 while Chester's (64/38) was 1.684.
The next year, not that it mattered, our goal average was a whopping 2.846 (111/39).
The year after (1976/77) goal difference came into use.
In 1981-82, 3 points for a win wasintroduced.
1986-87 saw the playoffs start, not that it concerned us !
