Jimmy Munro A Right Imp Winger

Jimmy Munro A Right Imp Winger

The tricky winger plied his early trade roasting Scottish fullbacks during the war with Aberdeen and then Dunfermline before signing for Waterford in Ireland. It was here that he was scouted by Manchester City who signed the promising outside right in 1947. Jimmy would only get the chance to play 25 times and score 4 goals in a turbulent time that saw three managers in 1947 alone for City. Poor Jimmy was doubtless relieved go to Oldham after 3 seasons in the back of Jock Thompson`s mind. Here his career began to really take off as he wowed the Boundary Park faithful with his pace and skill. Wee Jimmy would make 119 League appearances for Oldham, scoring 21 goals over the next 3 seasons before Bill Anderson enticed him to join the Imps in March 1953. Indeed Jimmy was so popular at the Lattics that they still ensured he received his Division 3 North winner`s medal at the end of the season.

Munro wore the number 7 and was an instant hit at a Sincil Bank basking in our glorious heyday. Another of Bill Anderson`s gems it was in truth he along with Roy Finch down the left wing plus inside forward Ernie Whittle that really made the famous G Force of the fabulous fifties tick. A small skilful outside right he would mesmerise the Bank for 4 seasons as an ever-present in the Imps forward line as Johnny Garvie and the Herculean figure of Andy Graver took the plaudits and the league`s second tier by storm. He had a pace and two footed trickery that would leave players on their backsides as he went for the line to cross or cut inside to delivera venomous drive that bellied his slight frame. Voted number 91 in our list of top 100 legends Jimmy always did well against Notts County invariably scoring and always finishing up as man of the match.

With Jimmy turning 31 Bill Anderson brought in Ron Smillie towards the end of the 1956/57 and he struggled to get back in. making just three appearances the following season before Bury came in for him for a fee. A full season at Bury saw him make 41 appearances and net 8 goals before he elected to move South in preparation for his retirement. He would join Weymouth and then Poole Town before moving up to Cambridgeshire to play local football with Ely City. He then worked at a local brewery before becoming a postman for 17 years. Jimmy Munro RIP, died in 1997.
