Rate The Ref: Anthony Backhouse V Halifax

After the success of the first 'Rate The Ref' V Grimsby Town we decided to run it for the 5-1 defeat away at FC Halifax Town too.

The referee for this game was Anthony Backhouse.

The lowest rating he received was 2/10 and this was given to him by BrownImp and here's what he said: 'Probably a penalty, but I've seen players get away with tackles like that loads of times. I don't see how he can justify the red-card - it wasn't a clear goal scoring opportunity, and it wasn't violent or using excessive force.'

The highest rating was 9/10 and this was given to him by Kingearls and this is what he said: 'for me he was spot on with the red and I thought he got the rest right. You can't two foot someone, and for the record I was in line with his block so couldn't have had a better view'

The average rating for Anthony Backhouse was 5.17.

Here's some more of the comments:

JT_LCFC: 'Fans I have spoken too have said Power flew in two footed - sounds awfully risky.'

CrazyTuba: 'I will give 3/10...thought it was a penalty but was never a red card...killed the game'

BongoChrist: 'Defo red, two footed studs showing lunge.

Idiotic challenge

The ref wanted to even it up but couldn't because we were so abysmal.

7/10'

Steve O'Dare: 'Don't agree with the comments with regard to the challenge. Nothing dangerous in it in my view. Both Skeggyimp and I commented "Great tackle" when Power went in. It was a hard challenge but a fair one. So no, shouldn't have been a penalty and therefore the red card was just stabbing the corpse. Apart from that thought the ref had a reasonable game. Having said that this one really poor decision put the game to bed to be honest. So 5/10.'

joshimp7: 'I think 5/10 too because he did make some good calls and some not so good.'

impsimps: 'Never a pen or a red card - end of.'

Thanks to those that provided ratings. Hopefully we will get a few more do this for the Grimsby and Luton games.

I think it is misleading to think of it as a two footed tackle. Both feet were off the floor; so a foul in the box and therefore a penalty I can live with. But the second leg was bent and nowhere near the standing leg of the player - I only saw studs on the leading leg. My recall is that the striker only went over after the ball had gone and by his own momentum. So a booking would have been fair. My opinion/recall and the letter of the law may not tally, but my immediate reaction was 'great tackle'. The Ref was at 90 degrees to the fans though, so his view wouldn't have shown Power in front of the player and taking the ball; just coming in from the side with both feet off the ground. After that there was one call back for a tackle when we appeared to have broken through, but most of the time he was a vent for the frustration, rather than the product of our inevitable downfall.

On the commentary a lot of the Halifax supporters around them were confused as to why it was a penalty and a sending off! Says it all!
