Rate The Ref: Ross Joyce V Halifax
The referee for our 3-2 defeat away at FC Halifax Town on Monday afternoon in the Football Conference was Ross Joyce.
Last Season he was the man in the middle for our 0-0 home draw against Luton Town. He got an average rating of 6.94 for his performance in this game.
He was also the referee for our away game at Alfreton Town, which finished 1-1. He got an average of 6.50.
Let's take a look at the ratings and comments he received after our 3-2 defeat away to Halifax!
redstriper: "Zero, and that's still not low enough. Awful.
Thought he got the penos right and that is all. All we ask is consistency, all we get is dross."
Impish: "The refs are consistently rubbish, just mostly decisions that go against us!
Just read on another forum that Hamza got one yellow for simply asking the ref why he was the only one getting pulled up and picked on at corners? Unbelievable."
Snats: "Sounds like a bit of a power-crazed ref, but then there are quite a few of them at this level. The standard of officiating in this league is shocking, I thought last season was bad in that respect but this year they seem even worse."
Red Wimp: "1 for wearing the right kit.
Can't comment on Bencherif's 1st booking obviously but he did warn him earlier to be fair, but the 2nd yellow, well there were many similar challenges not deemed worthy of a yellow you would have thought some common sense might apply. At one stage he gave us a yellow card every time we fouled, and then gave us one when they fouled as well"
Jamesimp: "He brandished yellow cards every time we did something dodgy whilst there blokes were told to calm down. Two certain penalties but on the whole poor, a generous 4."
He got the penalty decisions correct which saves him from a total slaughtering. However, he booked our players for everything and barely had a word with theirs for similar challenges. Can't comment on Hamza's first as I don't know what was said, but the second was beyond ridiculous. Also, their only player on a yellow kicked Tomlinson (who probably did make a meal of it) and yet Diagne was booked! I can't help but feel if it was the other way around we'd have had another off.
I appreciate referees are in this league for a reason but I just cannot get my head around their thought processes sometimes."
cooperativeimp: "Just been looking at the Halifax forum, most on there seem to think our complaints about the ref are just sour grapes. In fact one or two even suggested he was too lenient with us. I think it is always rather telling when the home fans defend the referees performance so vigorously.
I thought he was very inconsistent and ultimately affected the game with a very harsh sending off. 1/10."
GoBC: "3/10 As others have said, it was the inconsistency that was the problem. Perfect example was the re-start after Halifax's third goal - ball played back to Power on the edge of the centre circle and a Halifax player just took his back leg away, nothing especially malicious but as plain as the nose on yer face, ref stood no more than 5 yards away and waved away Power's appeal even though Halifax had the ball. Compare that with Newton's challenge late on - no more violent but he not only deemed it a foul, but booked him too. Think Diagne was booked for appealing for a card, which I've seen pundits tut about on TV but can't recall seeing a player cautioned for - can't really blame Diagne, think he was as fed up as everyone else with ref by that point. Penalties were spot on though, I only saw lino flagging for ref's attention on the one against us, not for a corner, and it clearly came off Diagne's outstretched elbow."
Bert Bowery: "2/10 for getting the penalties right."
