Weekly Quiz Answers (11/7/16)
1. Besides being an integral part of the side that almost won promotion to the Second Division in 1982 and 1983, what did Gordon Hobson, Phil Turner, Steve Thompson, Gordon Simmonite and Stuart Hibberd have in common?

They were all born in Sheffield, and three of them - Hobson, Turner and Hibberd - came through City's nursery team Sheffield Rangers.

2. Which former City hero knocked us out of the FA Cup in 1992-93?

Dennis Booth, who was the manager of Stafford Rangers when City somehow lost to them on one of the wettest nights in the history of the world - 25 November 1992. Graham Bressington may have a particular reason to remember the game, coming on as a late substitute and being sent off within minutes for a shocking 'couldn't care less' tackle. For the record, City lost 2-1 in a first round replay on a slag heap of a pitch, watched by 2,309 very wet people. A great night out.

3. Which member of the 1987-88 championship side went on to become an international manager?

Striker Mick Waitt, who was head coach of New Zealand between 2002 and 2004. Back in 1987, Mick started the season like a rocket, scoring 8 goals in the opening 12 games as City's newly-assembled team found its feet in the Conference. Perhaps Stafford Rangers owed us - Mick scored a hat-trick in the 4-1 win at Marston Road on 5 September 1987. Unfortunately he suffered a serious compound fracture of the leg in the home game against Cheltenham on 31 October and missed almost the next two years. He played only 8 more games for the Imps before leaving by mutual consent in December 1989. After spells in Lincolnshire football and in Hong Kong, Mick eventually emigrated to New Zealand where he became a coach with Napier.

4. Which former City player holds the record for the fastest ever goal for Aston Villa?

Bob Iverson, who scored after 9 seconds against Charlton Athletic in the First Division game at Villa Park on 3 December 1938. Villa went on to win 2-0 in front of 39,505. Iverson had left Sincil Bank for Wolves in February 1935 after scoring a goal every other game from midfield. He joined neighbours Aston Villa in December 1936 and gave them 16 years of service as player and first team coach. Like many players of his generation, his career was ruined by the Second World War. Bob died in Birmingham in 1953, aged 42.

5. Which former City assistant manager now owns a guest house in Ayrshire?

Jim McCalliog.

6. ...and which former City star owned a rock-making factory in Blackpool?

The great Jock Dodds. He also owned a guest house, among other things.

7. Which dubious Lincoln City distinction is held by Joe Buick?

He scored the last Lincoln City goal (to date) in the Second Division, in the 2-0 win over Leyton Orient on 29 April 1961.

8. According to Fred Eyre, what role in team selection was played by Sandy Anderson?

Sandy was manager Bill Anderson's labrador. Fred says that if the dog liked you, you were in the team.

9. What is this sequence, and what comes next: HL, DGH, GT, GAMK, WJB.....?

These are the initials of City's managers in the 1970s: Herbert (Bert) Loxley, David George Herd, Graham Taylor, George Adams McDonald Kerr, and William (Willie) John Bell. The next one is - of course - CVM (Colin Victor Murphy).

10. Whose record is this?:

2005-06: relegated from the Football League
2006-07: relegated from the Football League
2007-08: relegated from the Football League
2010-11: relegated from the Football League

Drewe 'Jonah' Broughton, who was signed by Chris Sutton in the summer of 2010. Broughton was relegated from the FL with Rushden & Diamonds in 2006, Boston United in 2007 and completed an astounding hat-trick with Wrexham in 2008. We can only presume that Sutton didn't believe Broughton's unbelievable record of failure could possibly continue. It did.
