Average Player Ratings v Luton Town (h)

Average Player Ratings v Luton Town (h)
Incredibly, just five games into the new season, we have already played last season's three losing play-off contenders, plus Wycombe (who finished 9th). On Saturday we head to Stevenage, who finished just 4 points off the play-offs in 10th. If someone at the EFL wanted to give City a baptism of fire, they did a good job. On the positive side, not only does that create a very useful yardstick for measuring how well we are doing as a team in the early stages, it also gives us an idea of exactly how good some of our players actually are. With Luton fancied by everyone for the title (except by a Weeble in Mansfield), this game provided another stern test which the players met admirably.

Back in first place is ALEX WOODYARD, who has been vying with Sean Raggett for top spot every week. With the transfer window now closed (sorry, slammed shut), we can enjoy this star of the future for another few months at least.

"Possibly the best player I've seen at Sincil Bank in 20 years. Big statement, I know, but he's so consistent, his strength is unbelievable, the big lad in the middle for them was twice the size of him and he was outmuscling him with ease, great in possession, never stops." (APHLCFC)

"Managed to win the majority of tussles with two of the league's best midfielders in Ruddock and Berry. Some incisive passing." (Dreaming of McAuley)

"Brilliant 1st half. Winning back the ball on many occasions and never giving it away." (elkimp)

In second place comes captain LUKE WATERFALL, returning to full fitness after missing a chunk of pre-season. All Danny has to do is find another centre half as good to replace the departing Raggett in January.

"Absolutely outstanding performance. Strong and quick, cool under pressure, wholehearted defending." (Jaggy Imp)

"Barely gave their attack a look in." (takeyourblueshirtoff)

"Looked back to his best." (Luke Imp)

In third place - and appearing in our top three for the first time - is MICHAEL BOSTWICK, who appears to divide opinion over the effectiveness of his partnership with Alex Woodyard. Familiarity will certainly increase as they play more games.

"I just about agreed with the MOTM I thought he basically saved us a goal when that scramble happened and was very strong in midfield. The odd silly free kick but that's about it." (Rasenimp)

"Good game and closed down many of Luton's chances but some silly needless fouls." (Stevie_imp)

"Lucky not to pick up a yellow." (Red Wimp)

Interesting to see Sean Long and Neal Eardley closely grouped just outside the top three. With Sam Habergham returning to full fitness and pressing for a recall, Danny will have a real headache deciding which player to relegate to the bench.

The average team score of 6.95 is actually the lowest of the season at home. What would we have given for an average score like that 18 months ago? Every player reached the par score of 6.0.

1. Alex Woodyard 7.89
2. Luke Waterfall 7.60
3. Michael Bostwick 7.35
4. Neal Eardley 7.25
5. Sean Long 7.10
6. Sean Raggett 7.03
7. Billy Knott 6.89
8. Nathan Arnold 6.78
9. Matt Green 6.64
10. Harry Anderson 6.57
11. Paul Farman 6.25
12. Matt Rhead 6.00
